Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is a Hindu festival of lights celebrated annually in autumn (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) according to the Hindu calendar. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. It is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism.

The festival gets its name from "deepa" meaning "lamp" and "avali" meaning "row". The festival of lights signifies the illumination of knowledge and dispelling ignorance. The festival also signifies the victory good over evil, and the triumph of hope over despair.

 

There are no clear dates for the start of this festival. Diwali is celebrated on the 15th day of the dark fortnight of Kartik in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, corresponding to late October or early November. It is the last day of the Hindu month of Kartika. The festival typically lasts for five days, starting from Dhanteras, followed by Naraka Chaturdashi, Diwali, Govatsa Dwadashi, and Yama Dwitiya. Each day has its own rituals and significance.

The festival is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the birth of Tibetan Medicine Buddha, a Bodhisattva who is considered to be the embodiment of healing and compassion.

 

Tibetan Medicine Buddha is celebrated on the 15th day of the 9th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, which typically falls in September or October. The festival is celebrated with prayers, offerings, and rituals. The festival is also a time for people to seek blessings and healings from the Tibetan Medicine Buddha.
